It has been lying there ever since, which makes it one of the few places where you can see ancient sculpture at the moment the work stopped.
What you see
A colossal figure, still attached to the bedrock, with the shape of the head, shoulders, arms and legs cut but no detail. Standing beside it gives you the scale in a way no museum can: this was intended to be raised, moved and finished.
Naxos was the marble island, and the quarries here supplied sculpture across the Aegean. Two other unfinished kouroi lie in quarries near Melanes in the island’s centre, smaller and in a green setting, and they make a good pair with this one.
The visit
Short. A path leads up from the road above Apollonas to a viewing area beside the figure. Ten minutes covers it, plus the drive.
Entry has traditionally been free, and the site is open ground rather than a gated monument.
The drive is the day
Apollonas is at the far north of Naxos, an hour or more from Naxos Town on a winding mountain road through Filoti and Apeiranthos, or up the coast road on the west side.
That makes the kouros an excuse rather than a destination: the route is the day, with village stops, and the statue at the top. There is a small beach and a few tavernas at Apollonas itself for lunch before turning back.

How far is Apollonas from Naxos Town?
An hour or more by car, either over the mountain road through Filoti and Apeiranthos or up the west coast.
Are there other kouroi on Naxos?
Yes, two smaller unfinished figures lie in quarries near Melanes in the island’s interior.
