Filoti: the biggest village in the Naxos mountains

Filoti is the largest of the Naxos mountain villages, spread across the slope below Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades.

What to do

  • Sit in the square. That is the honest answer, and it is a good one at the end of a hot day.
  • Walk the lanes, which climb steeply between houses and marble-paved alleys to the church at the top.
  • Start the climb of Mount Zas from the road above the village, which is the standard route to the summit and the cave associated with Zeus.
  • Drive on to the smaller villages and the Byzantine chapels of the Tragaea, with Halki below and Apeiranthos above.

Why the interior matters

Naxos is the one Cycladic island with real mountains, water and farmland, and the interior is why it fed the archipelago for centuries. The villages here are green, cool and lived-in, and they are the reason to hire a car for a day rather than staying on the west-coast beaches all week.

Filoti is the natural centre of that day: most inland routes pass through it, and it has the shops and tavernas the smaller villages do not.

Practical notes

  • Park on the main road and walk in; the lanes are steep and narrow.
  • Buses serve the village from Naxos Town, but the interior rewards your own transport.
  • Shade is easy here, which is rare in the Cyclades in August.
  • For Mount Zas, start early, take water and proper shoes; it is a real mountain walk of a few hours.
