Halki: the quiet capital of the Naxos interior

Halki, sometimes written Chalki, is the main village of the Tragaea, the broad olive-covered valley at the centre of Naxos.

It is the standard first stop on the inland drive, and the reason to make that drive at all.

What to see

  • The village itself, small enough to walk in twenty minutes, with tower houses and a shaded square.
  • The citron distillery, where the island’s kitron liqueur is made from citron leaves, with a small museum attached. Tasting is the usual reason people stop, and it is the one souvenir from Naxos that is genuinely of the island.
  • Panagia Protothroni, the church on the square, one of the oldest on the island with layers of Byzantine wall painting.
  • The olive groves around the village, and the paths between hamlets that make this the island’s best walking country.

Why the interior matters

Most Naxos visitors stay on the west-coast beaches and never leave them, which is a shame on the one Cycladic island large and fertile enough to have a proper interior. The Tragaea is green, cool in the shade of olives, and full of small Byzantine churches, and it explains why Naxos was rich when its neighbours were not.

From Halki the road continues up to Apeiranthos, the marble-paved mountain village, and towards Mount Zas, which is the standard inland day.

Practical notes

  • A car or scooter makes the interior work; buses reach the main villages but not the pace of a day out.
  • Shade is easy to find here, which is unusual in the Cyclades in August.
  • Shops keep village hours, so the middle of the afternoon can be quiet.
