Adamas, also written Adamantas, is the port of Milos and the practical centre of the island.

It is not the prettiest place on Milos. Plaka on the hill and the syrmata hamlets have that. Adamas is where things work.

What is there

  • The waterfront, a long curve of tavernas, cafes and tour offices facing the bay.
  • The Mining Museum, which explains the geology that shapes every beach on the island: obsidian traded across the prehistoric Aegean, and the bentonite and perlite still quarried today.
  • The catacomb-era churches and a small ecclesiastical collection in the old quarter above the port.
  • The town beaches, Papikinou among them, shallow and ordinary but a short walk from a room.

Why people base here

Three reasons, and they are all logistical:

  • Boat tours start here. The Kleftiko trip is the island’s headline day and it sails from this quay.
  • The bus network runs from here to Plaka, Pollonia, Sarakiniko and the south-coast beaches, which matters if you are not hiring a car.
  • The ferry and the airport bus both connect here, so arrival and departure are simple.

The trade is atmosphere: evenings in Adamas are pleasant rather than memorable, and the sunset belongs to Plaka. Where to stay in Milos sets the three bases against each other.

Practical notes

  • Book the Kleftiko boat early in your stay, because wind cancels sailings and you want a spare day behind it.
  • Hire cars go quickly in August; book ahead rather than on arrival.
  • The port is busy on ferry days, which is worth knowing if your room is on the quay.
