The climb to the Kastro
From the village a stepped path climbs to the castle rock, past a church built into the fortifications, and comes out on a small summit with the whole island below: the flooded caldera of the bay, the villages around it, and open sea beyond.
It is a short climb, ten to fifteen minutes from the top of the village, on uneven steps and rock. It is also the sunset spot, which means it is crowded at exactly that hour and quiet an hour either side.
The village itself
Lanes, whitewash, bougainvillea, a handful of cafes and tavernas with terraces facing west, and two small museums: the archaeological collection and a folk museum, both modest and both worth twenty minutes if the day is hot.
Below Plaka, the neighbouring villages of Tripiti and Triovasalos run into each other, which is why our things to do in Milos page treats the cluster as one destination: the catacombs, the Roman theatre and the Venus de Milo find spot are all a short walk down from here.
Parking is the real problem
You cannot drive into the village. Parking is on the approach roads, and in high season the queue for a space at sunset is the least romantic part of the day.
The fix is simple and almost nobody uses it: go up early, take the castle before the crowd, eat afterwards, and let the sunset happen from a terrace rather than from the summit.
Practical notes
- Shoes for the castle steps, which are stone and uneven.
- Wind. The summit is exposed, and Milos is a windy island.
- Evenings are cool on the hill even in August, which is part of the appeal.
