Ios

Where to stay in Ios

Ios is small, so nowhere is far from anywhere. That makes the choice of base feel low-stakes, and it is the opposite: the loud half of this island occupies one village and one beach, so where you sleep decides whether you are inside it or outside it. Pick deliberately.

Chora, if the nightlife is the point. The bars are wedged into the fabric of a real hill village, in the houses along the lanes and around the square, which is exactly why a night here is walkable and needs no taxi at the end of it. Sleeping in Chora means you step out into the night and step back in from it. It also means the night is happening under your window. If you are here for the going-out, this is the only base that makes sense, and the trade is sleep.

Mylopotas, if you want the beach and some of the noise. The long sand sits a short way below the town, and in season its beach bars carry music and day parties from the middle of the afternoon. Basing here puts you on the beach in the daytime and within reach of Chora in the evening, without the lanes directly outside the door. It is the compromise position, and like most compromises it satisfies people who want both things and frustrates people who wanted one.

The port, if you want quiet and an early boat. Around the harbour you get the calmest of the three bases, the shortest walk to the ferry, and Koumbara and Valmas within reach for a swim. It is the choice for anyone treating Ios as one leg of a route rather than a destination, and for anyone who wants the island’s quiet half without organising transport around it every day.

Beyond those three, you are committing to wheels. The rest of the coast is long and mostly empty, and the beaches out there need a scooter, an ATV or a car, sometimes with a walk on top. Staying out that way is a real option and a genuinely different holiday, but it is one where every dinner, every swim and every boat is a drive. Decide that before you book rather than after. Which islands need a car is the general version of the question.

The honest sizing. Chora is a hill village, so a room in it is reached by lanes and steps rather than by a road, and the same car-free fabric that makes the night walkable makes the luggage awkward. If stairs are a problem, that matters more here than the distance does, and accessibility in Greece is worth reading first.

How long the island earns. Ios rewards a short stay well. Two or three nights covers the town, one quiet beach and one long one, which is the shape most people actually want. Longer works if you have wheels and intend to use the empty coast properly. Our Ios guide covers the island in full, the beaches sort themselves by the road that reaches them, and things to do beyond the nightlife is the half of Ios the reputation hides.

We name no hotel on this page. Rooms on an island this size change hands, rebrand and close between seasons, so a list of names is out of date before you read it. What lasts is the geography, which is the three bases above and the trade each one makes.
