Beaches in Ios

Ios has one beach everybody knows and a coastline of long, mostly empty ones behind it, and the thing that separates them is not beauty. It is the road. Most of the good beaches here need a scooter, an ATV or a car, and a few need a short walk on top of that, which is a filter the day crowd rarely passes. That is the whole sorting mechanism on this island.

Mylopotas is the main event and the easiest to reach. It is the long sand a short way below Chora, and in season its beach bars carry music and day parties from the middle of the afternoon. That is either exactly what you came for or exactly what you want to avoid, and it is worth knowing which before you plan your days around it. It is also the only beach on the island you can treat as walkable from the town.

Manganari, for when the wind is up. A run of sheltered shallow bays across the south, calm and widely rated among the best water in the Cyclades. This is the answer when the meltemi is blowing through and the exposed coasts have turned choppy, and it is far enough that getting there is the day rather than a detour in it.

Agia Theodoti, broad and slow. A wide sandy bay on the northeast coast, quiet and open, with an old church behind it. It is the beach for a day when you want space rather than a scene, and the drive across the island is part of what you are buying.

Psathi, if you want the far end. Remote and low-key on the east side, reached on a rougher road. Take that description seriously when you decide what to hire.

Koumbara and Valmas, for a short escape. Koumbara is the closest quiet beach to the town, just past the port, with a headland and clearer water. Valmas is a small cove near the port, the one you use when you do not want to travel at all. Between them they cover the afternoon when the scooter stays parked.

Pick by the wind as much as by the map. When the meltemi runs through the Cyclades in high summer the exposed beaches get choppy and the sheltered south around Manganari is the calm choice; on a still day the whole coast is fair game. None of that is a promise about conditions on the day you swim, so read the water when you arrive rather than the description here. The mechanism behind it is in what the sea is like.

The walks are part of this list, not separate from it. On an island this small a morning on foot from the town to a beach and back is one of the better things to do here, and it costs nothing and books nothing. The paths up onto the ridge connect the quiet coast in a way the road does not.

What you need to hire, honestly. Everything except Mylopotas, Koumbara and Valmas assumes wheels.
