The east coast faces the mainland across a narrow, sheltered channel, so its water sits calm. The west takes the open Ionian. That is not a preference; it is why the family resorts are where they are.
The east: bay after bay
The east coast - from Dassia, Gouvia and Ypsos up to Kalami and Kassiopi - faces the narrow channel rather than the open sea, and it is bay after bay rather than exposed coast.
That geography is why the villas and the family resorts are here, with an upmarket-British character in its northern coves. Families base here for the shape of the coast, which is the honest reason rather than any claim about a particular beach.
The west and northwest: the drama, and a car
Paleokastritsa, Agios Georgios Pagon and Sidari are the other Corfu: cliff-backed coves, monastery views and the island’s sunsets.
Two things to weigh with children. It wants a car - this is not a bus-and-walk coast. And its open-Ionian water runs cooler than the east’s.
It makes a superb day out from an east-coast base. As a base itself with small children, it is a different and more demanding trip. The Corfu itinerary is built around picking one coast and staying on it, because crossing daily turns a holiday into a commute.
The one corner to skip
Kavos in the far south is the one area to skip with kids. It is a British 18-25 party strip: cheap, loud in season and quiet by day. It is a base people choose on purpose, and the only mistake is booking near it without meaning to.

The town, which children generally like more than expected
Corfu Town is a UNESCO-listed Venetian old town, and it is the reason to come here rather than to a quieter Ionian island. The fortresses, the Liston and the kantounia lanes fill a morning, and the Kanoni viewpoint over Mouse Island or the Achilleion’s gardens add to it.
It also empties in the evening when the day-trippers and cruise passengers leave, which makes the evening the better half of the day - and a more comfortable one with children than the middle of the afternoon.
Getting there, which is not the Aegean pattern
The Ionians are not reached from Piraeus. You fly in - about an hour from Athens, with seasonal directs from across Europe roughly April to October - or you cross from the western mainland at Igoumenitsa.
The airport helps here: it sits just south of Corfu Town and the run into town is one of the shortest in Greece, which with children is worth more than it sounds. Corfu airport to Corfu Town covers it.
