“Ioannis Kapodistrias” (CFU) sits just south of Corfu Town, and the run into town is one of the shortest in Greece. If Corfu Town is your base, the transfer is a solved problem and you can stop reading here: take a taxi or a pre-booked car and be in the Old Town in minutes.
The rest of this page is about the decision that actually matters, which the shortness of this run tends to hide.
The real question is the car, not the transfer
Corfu’s shape decides your trip. The east coast faces the mainland across a narrow, sheltered channel, so its water sits calm; the west takes the open Ionian and gets the cliffs, the coves and the sunsets. The west needs a car.
So the honest sequence is:
- Decide which coast your trip is about. The Corfu itinerary and the beaches both start there.
- If the answer involves the west or the mountainous north at all, collect a car at the airport and this transfer stops existing as a separate problem.
- If you are staying in Corfu Town or on the sheltered east and not driving, take the short ride and use buses and boats from there.
Picking up a car you do not need, for an airport run this short, is the mistake this page exists to prevent.
If you are heading somewhere other than the town
Corfu is bigger than the airport’s proximity to the capital suggests, and the far south is a real drive. Kavos, at the southern tip, is a British 18-25 party strip - a base you choose on purpose. If that is where you are going, the transfer is a genuine journey and worth pre-booking rather than improvising at the rank.
Getting to Corfu in the first place
Worth knowing, because it is not the pattern the Aegean islands follow: the Ionians are not reached from Piraeus. You fly in, or you cross from the western mainland ports. The Athens flight takes about an hour, and from roughly April to October seasonal directs connect CFU with cities across the UK and Europe, so most visitors never touch Athens at all.
By sea it is a mainland route: a drive or bus to Igoumenitsa, then a crossing that runs year-round. Athens to Corfu has both versions.
