This is an anticlockwise loop. Seven days is comfortable; ten is better; five works if you cut the Mani.

Day 1: Athens to Nafplio

Out over the Corinth canal, which takes ten minutes and is worth the stop, then south.

Stop at Mycenae for the Lion Gate and the tholos tombs, or at Epidaurus for the theatre with the famous acoustics. Doing both in one day is possible and rushed.

Sleep in Nafplio: Venetian, walkable, two fortresses, and the best small-town evening in Greece.

About two hours of driving.

Day 2: Nafplio

Stay put. Walk up to the Palamidi fortress early, before the heat, and spend the afternoon on the old town and the waterfront. If you want a beach, Tolo and Ermioni are close.

Day 3: Nafplio to Monemvasia

South down the eastern coast, through Leonidio under its red cliff if you want the scenic version, or inland if you want the fast one.

Monemvasia is a town built inside a rock, invisible from the mainland side, entered by a single causeway and a gate. Sleep inside the walls.

About three hours, more on the coast road.

Day 4: Monemvasia to the Mani

West into the Mani, the middle finger of the Peloponnese: tower houses, stone villages, a landscape of rock and cactus, and the Diros caves toured by boat underground.

Sleep at Kardamyli or Gythio.

About two and a half hours.

Day 5: The Mani to Messinia

North-west into Messinia, softer and greener: Koroni and Methoni with their Venetian sea castles, Pylos on its bay, and Voidokilia, the near-perfect crescent of sand behind a lagoon.

Ancient Messene, north of Kalamata, is one of the largest and least-visited classical sites in the country.

About two hours plus wandering.

Day 6: Messinia to Olympia

North along the coast to Olympia, the sanctuary where the games were held, with a very good museum. Go early or late; the site has little shade.

About two hours.

Day 7: Olympia back to Athens

Either the fast way, north to Patras and east on the motorway along the gulf, past Nafpaktos across the water and Xylokastro on this side.

Or the slow way, inland through Arcadia and its stone villages: Dimitsana, Vytina and the Lousios gorge, which adds a couple of hours and is the better drive.

Three to five hours depending on the route.

Practical notes

  • Motorways are tolled and the network is genuinely good. The coastal and mountain roads are slower than the map suggests.
  • A small car is better. Village streets and castle-town parking were not designed for anything wide.
  • Book Monemvasia ahead if you want to sleep inside the walls; there are not many rooms.
  • Sites close early in winter and mid-afternoon at some times of year. Check before a long detour.
  • Summer is hot inland. May, June, September and October are the months for this trip.

Last checked August 2026. Site hours and toll roads change - see our editorial policy.

Common questions

How long do you need for a Peloponnese road trip?

Seven days is comfortable for the full loop, ten is better, and five works if you skip the Mani.

Do you need a car in the Peloponnese?

Effectively yes. The old railway network is largely suspended and the KTEL buses, while comprehensive, make a loop like this very slow.

What is the best route around the Peloponnese?

An anticlockwise loop from Athens: Nafplio, Monemvasia, the Mani, Messinia, Olympia and back, which keeps the driving days short.

When is the best time for a Peloponnese road trip?

May, June, September and October. Inland summer heat is severe and the archaeological sites have very little shade.

What should you not miss in the Peloponnese?

Nafplio, Monemvasia, the Mani tower villages and Voidokilia beach, with Epidaurus, Mycenae, Mystras and Olympia as the archaeology.
