Inside the walls there are houses, vegetable gardens, olive trees, chapels and a working convent, with lanes running between them. It is a fortress that turned into a quiet neighbourhood, and walking through it is a completely different experience from walking through a ruin.
The castle
Venetian, on a headland above the sea, with the Ottoman period layered on top of it. The gate, the bastions and long stretches of wall stand; the interior is green and lived in.
The convent of Timiou Prodromou occupies part of it, and there is a small church built over an earlier basilica. From the seaward walls the drop to the water is considerable and the view runs down the coast.
Entry is free and open, and there is little in the way of railings or interpretation.
The town
Below the castle, tiered houses with tiled roofs run down to a working fishing harbour, with tavernas along the front. It is small, and in the evening it is very pleasant.
Koroni is also an olive town: the Messenian oil from this coast is among the best in Greece, and it is sold plainly, from ordinary shops, rather than as a souvenir.
Zaga
Below the castle on the far side is Zaga, a long curve of sand with dunes and pine behind it and, for a beach this good, remarkably little on it. It is the best beach in the immediate area and one of the better ones in Messenia.
Koroni and Methoni
The two Venetian ports of Messenia were known together as the eyes of the Republic, because they controlled the sea route to the east. Methoni, across the peninsula, has the grander and emptier castle. Doing both in a day is the standard and correct plan.
Getting there and how long
About 50 minutes from Kalamata, which has the nearest airport.
Two nights, or one if you are touring Messenia.

Common questions
What is special about Koroni castle?
It was never abandoned. Inside the Venetian walls there are houses, gardens, chapels and a working convent rather than ruins, and you walk through lanes between them.
Is there a beach at Koroni?
Yes, Zaga, a long sandy curve with dunes and pine below the castle on the seaward side, and it is largely undeveloped.
What were the eyes of the Republic?
Koroni and Methoni, the two Venetian ports of Messenia, which together controlled the sea route east and were known by that name.
How far is Koroni from Kalamata?
About fifty minutes by road. Kalamata has the nearest airport.
Should you visit Koroni or Methoni?
Both, in a day. Koroni’s castle is inhabited and green; Methoni’s is grander, emptier and more dramatic.
