It is regularly called the best beach in the Peloponnese, and unusually for that kind of claim it has almost nothing built on it.
Why nothing is built there
Because it cannot be. Behind the sand lies the Gialova lagoon, a protected wetland and one of the most important bird habitats in southern Greece, on the migration route between Africa and the Balkans. The dunes between the beach and the lagoon are part of that protection.
That is the reason there is no beach bar, no sunbed row and no road along the back: there is a small car park and a walk in over the dunes, and that is all.
Stay on the marked ways over the dunes. They are the fragile part.
What is above it
- Nestor’s Cave, a large cavern in the headland where, by tradition, Nestor or Neleus kept cattle, and where Hermes is said to have hidden Apollo’s. A steep path leads up to it from the north end of the beach.
- Palaiokastro, a Frankish castle on the ridge above, ruined and unfenced, with a view down over the beach, the lagoon and the bay of Navarino.
- The tholos tomb attributed to Thrasymedes, a Bronze Age beehive tomb on the slope.
The walk from the beach up to the cave and castle and back is a stiff hour and the best way to see the shape of the place.
Practical notes
- No facilities of any kind on the beach itself. Bring water and shade.
- The car park is small and fills early in summer.
- The lagoon is best at dawn if birds are the point.
- Gialova village nearby has tavernas and rooms; Pylos is ten minutes further.
Getting there and how long
About 50 minutes from Kalamata. It combines with Methoni and Koroni in a Messenian couple of days.
Half a day for the beach and the climb.

Common questions
Why is Voidokilia shaped like that?
It is a natural semicircular bay, closed almost entirely by two rock arms, which from above resembles the Greek letter omega.
Are there facilities at Voidokilia?
