The village
Grey stone houses with tiled roofs, a central square under plane trees with the church on it, and a scatter of guesthouses. It is well kept without being twee, and it is busiest at winter weekends and in August.
Vytina is known for woodwork: the forest supplied a carving and furniture trade, and workshops still sell boards, spoons and furniture along the main street. The other local product is spring water, which is bottled here and which the village makes a point of.
The forest and the walking
The fir forest around the village is the reason to come. Paths run out from the village in several directions, well marked by Greek standards, through the trees and to viewpoints over the Mainalo range.
Mount Mainalo above has a small ski centre, one of the closest to Athens, with a season from around December that depends heavily on the year.
In summer the same ground is walking and mountain-biking country, and the Menalon Trail, a long-distance route through Arcadia, passes nearby.
What is around it
Vytina sits in the middle of the best of Arcadia:
- Dimitsana and the Lousios gorge, about half an hour south-west.
- Stemnitsa, the stone silversmithing village, beyond it.
- Langadia, a village built almost vertically on a slope, west.
- Tripoli, about 45 minutes east.
Together they make a two or three-day Arcadian loop that very few foreign visitors do.
Getting there and how long
About two and a half hours from Athens, mostly on motorway then mountain road. A car is essential.
Two nights, and it is better in autumn, winter or spring than in high summer.
Last checked August 2026. Ski season depends on snow - see our editorial policy.
