The climbing
Since the 2010s that rock has made Leonidio one of the fastest-growing sport-climbing destinations in Europe: thousands of bolted routes on the red and orange limestone of the surrounding sectors, on steep tufa-streaked walls.
The season is autumn through spring, because the rock bakes in summer, which is the reverse of the region’s normal tourist calendar and has given the town a genuine winter economy.
The town has adapted: gear shops, climber accommodation, and a bus that runs to the crags.
Tsakonian
Leonidio is the centre of Tsakonian, which is not a Greek dialect in the ordinary sense. Most Greek descends from the Attic-Ionic branch; Tsakonian descends from Doric, the dialect of ancient Sparta, and is different enough that Greek speakers do not simply understand it.
It is spoken by a small and ageing number of people and is classified as endangered. Street signs in the town are bilingual, and there is a local effort to teach it.
Around the town
- Elona monastery, built into a cliff face in the gorge above the town, whitewashed against grey rock, reached by a road up the ravine.
- Plaka, the small harbour a couple of kilometres away, with fish tavernas and the beach.
- The aubergine, which Leonidio grows as a protected local variety and celebrates with a festival in August.
- Kosmas, a mountain village high above on the road inland, cool and shaded by plane trees.
Getting there and how long
About three hours from Athens down the east coast road, which is slow and scenic. There is a seasonal fast boat in summer.
Two nights, or a week if you have come to climb.
Last checked August 2026. Boat services are seasonal - see our editorial policy.
