On a clear day the view runs north across the narrow strait to the mountains of Albania, south along the whole length of Corfu, and west out to sea, where the coast of Italy is sometimes visible.
What is at the top
- The monastery of Pantokrator, founded in the fourteenth century and rebuilt since, a small courtyard and church at the summit.
- A telecommunications mast, large and unlovely, standing directly beside it. Nobody photographs the summit without deciding what to do about the mast.
- A cafe, seasonal, and the terrace everyone stands on.
The summit is a working transmitter site as well as a monastery, and the honest description is that the view is spectacular and the summit itself is cluttered.
The drive
The road climbs from the north-east coast through Old Perithia country, narrow and switchbacked, with drops on the outside of many bends and passing places rather than two lanes in places.
It is a proper mountain road. It is not technically difficult in good weather, but it is slow, and meeting a coach coming down is a real event. Go early, before the day trips, and see driving in Greece first.
Cloud sits on the summit often enough to matter. If the top is in cloud from the coast, it will be in cloud when you get there.
What to pair it with
The mountain and its slopes make a natural half day:
- Old Perithia, the abandoned Venetian village on the northern slopes, is on the way.
- Kassiopi is the harbour village on the coast below.
- The Bella Vista viewpoint and Angelokastro are the other high places on the island, on the west side.
