It is a ruin now, and the climb is the visit. What you get at the top is one of the widest views in the Ionian: the coastline running south towards Paleokastritsa, the sea in three directions, and the mountains behind.
What survives
- The outer walls and gate, built into the rock.
- A rock-cut chapel and cave shrines partway up.
- Cisterns carved into the stone, which is how the garrison held out.
- The summit keep area, largely ruined, with the view that justifies the climb.
Interpretation on site is light. This is a place to walk and look rather than to read.
The climb
From the parking area below, a stepped and uneven path climbs to the gate and then further to the summit. It is short but genuinely steep, on rock and stone steps, with drops beside parts of the route and few railings.
We do not certify any site as safe; what we can describe is the ground. It is uneven, exposed in places, and slippery when wet, and proper shoes matter more here than at any other Corfu monument.
Getting there and fitting it in
The castle sits above the village of Krini in the north-west, reached on narrow roads from the coast. It pairs naturally with Paleokastritsa and its monastery below, and with the viewpoint at Bella Vista nearby.
Go early or late: the climb is unpleasant in midday heat, and the light along the coast is better at either end of the day.
