Take it as most of a day, and take shade with you. Lalaria is white stone with nothing over it, which is spectacular in the morning and punishing at two in the afternoon.

Skopelos, the greenest island in Greece

The obvious island day trip, and it earns the crossing. Skopelos is a short hop east and reads as a completely different place: pine forest covering most of it and running right to the waterline, so the beaches are white pebble under dark green rather than sand under scrub.

Two things to aim at. Skopelos Town is a tiered amphitheatre of houses above its harbour, stacked steeply with slate roofs and an improbable number of churches, and the walk up through its stepped lanes is the best hour on the island. Agios Ioannis Kastri is the chapel on a rock stack on the north-east coast, reached by steps cut into the rock, which was the wedding chapel in the Mamma Mia film and is now the island’s single most visited spot.

Alonissos and the marine park

Beyond Skopelos lies Alonissos and the national marine park around it, the largest marine protected area in Europe and the reason this corner of the Aegean has a different reputation from the rest.

Boats run out that way in season, and what you get is a long day on the water with swimming stops and the chance of seeing more wildlife than you would elsewhere. It is a slower, wilder day than the Skopelos trip, and it suits people who want the boat itself to be the point.

Nobody should book it expecting guaranteed sightings. It is a protected habitat, not an attraction.

The small boats to the south-coast beaches

Not a day trip exactly, but worth knowing. Small boats run from the old port along the south coast, and taking one to a beach rather than the bus turns an ordinary beach afternoon into something better, especially to the coves the road does not reach cleanly.

One boat day round the north for Lalaria and the Kastro, one full day on Skopelos, and the rest on the south coast by bus. That gives you the wild half of your own island, the best-looking town in the Sporades, and enough sand in between.
