The Sporades are not connected to the Cyclades in any practical way. You reach them from the mainland ports of Volos or Agios Konstantinos, or you fly into Skiathos - which means the group is a destination in itself rather than a leg of a wider island-hopping trip.
That is not a warning against going. It is a warning against trying to bolt them onto a Cyclades route, which costs you days you will not get back. If the Sporades are the trip, plan them on their own.
What you are going for
These islands look nothing like the Cyclades. They are covered in pine forest that runs down to the water, so the contrast is green against blue rather than white against blue.
- Skiathos is the busy one, with the airport and the sand.
- Skopelos is the greenest island in Greece, pine to the waterline.
- Alonissos is the quiet one, sitting inside Greece’s first national marine park.
- Skyros is further out and genuinely off the usual routes - two islands in one, with a native pony breed.
The route
The first three sit in a line and hop easily. Skyros does not - it is further out and connects differently, which is why it belongs to a longer trip or a separate one.
The core route is Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, working outward from the airport or the mainland port. A week does it comfortably: two nights on Skiathos, three on Skopelos, two on Alonissos, or any redistribution that gives Skopelos the most.
Skiathos to Skopelos covers the main hop and the fact that there are two possible ports on the Skopelos side - which is the detail most likely to catch you.
Getting in
Fly to Skiathos if you can. It is the group’s airport and it removes the mainland drive entirely.
By sea, it is Volos or Agios Konstantinos rather than Piraeus. Athens to Volos covers the land leg to the port for the Sporades - and for Pelion, which pairs well with this trip if you are driving anyway.
From the north, Thessaloniki to Skiathos exists mostly to tell you to check the season before you plan it.
Alonissos and the marine park
Alonissos sits inside Greece’s first national marine park, and that is the reason it is quiet rather than an accident of geography. Protected water changes what boat trips are allowed to do, which is the same trade the Zakynthos marine park makes: the restrictions are why there is something left to go and see.
Where this route does not work
As part of a Cyclades trip. Repeated because it is the single most common way this group gets planned badly. Mixing groups costs days - the island-hopping guide explains why.
