Where to eat in Santorini
Eating on Santorini splits along the same line as everything else on the island: the caldera rim, and everywhere else. Knowing which side of that line you are standing on explains most of what the menu will cost and most of what you are paying for.
On the rim, the view is on the bill. Fira and Oia hold the tables people fly here for - sunset over the caldera, white lanes, a crowd arriving an hour before the light goes. A rim table at sunset is a real thing worth doing once, and it books out: in season, reserve rather than stroll. The trade is structural, not a secret - you are paying for where the table is, and the places a few streets back from the edge are often the better meal for less.
Off the rim is where the island actually eats. Kamari and the beach coast run to family tavernas with tables near the sand. And the inland villages - Pyrgos, Exo Gonia, Megalochori - keep the tavernas with vineyard and island views that fill with returning visitors and locals. The single most repeated piece of advice about eating here is to leave the rim for at least one dinner, and the ratings below bear it out: several of the island’s highest-rated tables are nowhere near the caldera.
How the places below were chosen. The cards under this guide name real, currently trading places, selected by the island’s own visitors rather than by us: each one clears a review-count floor and a rating floor on TripAdvisor or Google, with no contradiction on the other platform, and each card carries the date we last checked it. We have not eaten our way through Santorini, so no card describes a dish or promises an experience - it tells you what kind of place it is, where it is, and that the people who did eat there rate it consistently high.
What this page will not do. No prices - island menus move within a season, and a number printed here would be wrong by the time you read it. No “hidden gems” - a place either earns its rating in public or it is not named. And no certainty about opening: many Santorini kitchens close for winter, so if your trip is outside high season, check the place directly before walking up a hill for it.
For the island itself, start at Santorini; for where to sleep, where to stay in Santorini works through the areas the same way. What Greek menus mean and how ordering works is covered in Greek food and drink.
