Where to eat in Naxos

Naxos eats better than almost any island its size, for a reason the menus spell out: it is a farming island. The graviera, the potatoes, the citrus and much of the meat come from the island itself, and the difference shows up on the plate in a way visitors notice and rate.

Chora is the dining town. The lanes of the old market, the streets under the Kastro and the harbour front hold the island’s densest run of tavernas and restaurants, and every card below sits within it. The pattern inside Chora is worth knowing: the harbour front is the promenade dinner, the market lanes hold the older tavernas, and several of the best-rated kitchens open only in the evening.

The beach strip feeds its own. Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka have their own tavernas, and if you are based on the strip they are your easy dinners - tables near the sand, family kitchens, no drive. The reason none is named below is volume, not quality: the strip’s places are newer and smaller, and the ratings that clear our floors concentrate in Chora.

How the places below were chosen. Each card names a real, currently trading place selected by the island’s visitors, not by us: it clears a review-count floor and a rating floor on TripAdvisor or Google, with no contradiction on the other platform, and it carries the date we last checked it. We have not eaten our way around Naxos, so no card describes a dish - it says what kind of place it is, where it is, and that the people who ate there rate it consistently high.
