Where to stay in Mykonos

The decision: town, beach, or distance from the noise

Mykonos is small, and almost everyone stays in one of three ways: in the town, on a south-coast beach, or deliberately away from both. The choice turns on two things - whether you want to walk home from dinner, and how close to the party you are willing to sleep.

The island’s south coast holds the organised beaches, and they are not interchangeable: some are family bays with sunbeds and a taverna, and one or two are the loudest addresses in Greece. Booking the wrong one is the classic Mykonos mistake.

This page names areas, not hotels. We have not stayed in Mykonos’s hotels and will not rank them. What follows is what each area is like to sleep in.

Chora, the main town, is the reason a lot of people come: a maze of whitewashed lanes, the windmills above it, the waterfront at Little Venice, and the island’s densest concentration of places to eat and drink.

Staying here means you can walk to dinner and walk home, which on an island where taxis are famously scarce is worth more than it sounds. It also means noise - the lanes carry sound, and the town does not go quiet early in summer.

The other town caveats: the lanes were built to confuse pirates and they still work, so arriving with luggage is a genuine exercise; and vehicle access to much of the centre is restricted, so “in town” often means a walk from wherever a car can stop.

The south-coast beaches, which are not interchangeable

This is where the real differentiation is.

Ornos is the sheltered family bay closest to town - calm water, a strip of tavernas, easy access both to Chora and to the rest of the south coast. It is the standard answer for people who want a beach base without committing to a scene.

Platis Gialos is a long organised beach and the island’s boat hub: the sea taxis that run along the south coast leave from here, which makes it a practical base for beach-hopping without a car.

Psarou is the polished, high-end bay - the one with the reputation for glamour and the prices to match. Beautiful, and very much a scene.

Paraga and Paradise are the party coast. This is where the famous beach clubs are, and the music runs long and loud. If that is what you came for, staying here is efficient. If it is not, staying here is a mistake you cannot undo mid-trip - and “a short walk from Paradise” in a listing is a warning, not a selling point.

Agios Ioannis is the quieter west-facing option, small and sunset-oriented, a short drive from town.

The inland option

Ano Mera is the island’s only proper inland village: a real square with tavernas that serve people who live there, the Panagia Tourliani monastery, and a fraction of the price and noise of the coast.

The trade is total dependence on wheels. You are not walking to a beach or to Chora, and Mykonos taxis are scarce and expensive. Stay here if you are hiring a car or a quad and you want the island to be affordable and calm - not if you want to fall out of bed onto sand.

Getting around, which shapes everything

Mykonos has a real transport constraint that other islands do not: very few taxis, and demand that vastly exceeds them in summer.

Your options are the bus network, which is decent and connects the town to the main south-coast beaches; the sea taxis along the south coast, mostly from Platis Gialos; or your own wheels.

That constraint is exactly why where you sleep matters more here than on most islands. A base you can walk from - Chora, or a beach with a bus route - is worth a lot. A base that requires a taxi every evening will define your trip, and not pleasantly. See which islands need a car.

When to book

Mykonos is one of the two most heavily-booked islands in Greece, along with Santorini. For July and August, book months out. The island also has a pronounced season - a lot of places simply close outside it - so for May or October, check that what you are booking is open rather than assuming.

Not if you stay in town or on a bus-served south-coast beach. You do if you stay inland at Ano Mera. The island’s real constraint is a shortage of taxis, so either be somewhere you can walk from, or have your own transport.

Where should I stay in Mykonos on a budget?

Ano Mera inland is the cheapest workable base, and Paraga can be reasonable if you genuinely want the party coast. Mykonos is an expensive island generally - Naxos or Paros will cost far less for a similar Cycladic week.

Is Mykonos Town noisy at night?

Yes, in season. The lanes carry sound and the town stays lively late. That is the trade for being able to walk home from dinner.
