Its distinguishing feature is underfoot: geothermal heat warms the sand and the shallows in places, which is the volcano telling you it is still there.
What the hot sand actually means
In spots along the beach the ground is warm to the touch, and the sea near the shore can be noticeably warmer than a few metres out. It is uneven rather than uniform: one patch will surprise you and the next will be ordinary.
Two practical notes. Some patches get hot enough to be uncomfortable on bare feet, so pay attention where you put your towel. And local tavernas have traditionally used the ground heat for cooking, which is a genuine curiosity rather than a gimmick.
The beach itself
A long strip divided into sections by rock outcrops, with sand and small pebble, clear deepening water, and organised areas with loungers alongside quieter stretches.
The cliffs are the other attraction: mineral colours in bands, and worth walking along the shoreline to see properly. Their downside is that they shed material, so do not set up directly beneath them.
Where it fits

Practical notes
- Water shoes. The mix of pebble, rock and hot patches makes them worth it here.
- Facilities are seasonal and cluster at the organised sections.
- Shade is rented or brought; the cliffs give little.
