What it is like
Coarse pale sand and small pebble, clear water that deepens quickly, and the striped cliff behind you doing most of the visual work. The beach runs for a good stretch, so it takes people better than the small coves further west.
There are seasonal loungers and a canteen at the main end, and a walk along the sand gets you away from them. Shade is thin: the cliffs give some early and late, and nothing in the middle of the day.
The wind decides the day
This is the south coast, so it is sheltered from the meltemi that batters the north, which is exactly why it is the reliable summer choice. When the north wind blows, the south coast beaches are where the island goes.
The corollary: on a rare southerly, the swell arrives here instead, and Sarakiniko on the north side becomes the calm option. Check the wind direction before choosing.
Where it fits
Firiplaka sits next to Tsigrado, which is the cove reached by a rope and ladder descent through a gap in the rock, and near Paliochori with its geothermally warmed sand. The three make a natural south-coast day, and our best beaches in Milos page sorts the island’s coast by how you reach it.
Practical notes
- Take shade and water. Facilities are seasonal and thin.
- Water shoes help on the coarse sand and pebble.
- The road is sealed but the last stretch is narrow; the car park fills in August.
- The cliffs shed stones. Do not set up directly against the base of them.
Last checked August 2026. Facilities are seasonal - see our editorial policy.
Common questions
Can you drive to Firiplaka beach?
Yes. It is at the end of a sealed road on the south coast, which makes it one of the easiest good beaches to reach on Milos.
Is Firiplaka sandy?
Coarse pale sand and small pebble, with water that deepens fairly quickly close to shore.
Is there shade at Firiplaka?
Very little. The cliffs shade parts of the beach early and late, and seasonal umbrellas cover the main end.
What is the difference between Firiplaka and Tsigrado?
They are neighbours. Firiplaka is long and road-accessible; Tsigrado is a small cove reached down a rope-and-ladder descent through a cleft in the rock.
When is the south coast of Milos best?
When the meltemi is blowing from the north, which is most of the summer. The south coast is then the sheltered side of the island.
