Day trips from Kalamata: the whole south-west

The Mani, and the tower villages

The signature day out. The Mani is the middle peninsula of the southern Peloponnese, bare and stony, with tower houses built by feuding families standing on ridges above the sea.

The western coast road out of Kalamata runs between the mountains and the water and is one of the better drives in Greece. Kardamyli is the first stop, a stone village with a tower quarter above it and the gentlest introduction to the region. Areopoli further down is the capital of the inner Mani, and Vathia near the tip is the tower village everyone photographs, crowded onto a ridge and largely abandoned.

Going as far as Vathia is a full day. Turning back at Kardamyli is a half one and still worth it.

Voidokilia, and the Messenian coast

West, the coast holds the best beach in the Peloponnese and two Venetian fortresses.

Voidokilia is a near-perfect circle of pale sand enclosing turquoise shallows, with a lagoon behind it and a ruined castle on the hill above. It is a walk in rather than a drive up, which is a large part of why it has stayed as it is. Climb to the castle if the heat allows, for the view down onto the circle.

Methoni has a sea castle on a promontory with a small octagonal tower at the end, and Koroni on the other side of the same peninsula has a fortress with a village living inside its walls. Either pairs with Voidokilia; both in one day is a push.

Ancient Messene

North of the city, and the best ancient site within reach by a wide margin. Ancient Messene is one of the most complete classical cities in Greece, with a stadium, a theatre, a council house and long stretches of city wall, and it is usually almost empty.

That emptiness is the thing. Sites of this quality elsewhere in Greece come with coaches, and this one generally does not, which makes for a very different morning.

Over Taygetos to Mystras and Sparta

East, the road climbs over the Taygetos range and drops to the plain on the far side. The drive itself is the first half of the day.

Mystras is the destination: a Byzantine city built down a steep slope with churches, palaces and monasteries among the trees and a castle on the summit. It is a genuine climb and one of the most atmospheric sites in Greece. Sparta on the plain below is more about the setting and the museum than about standing remains.

This is a long day with a mountain pass at each end. Do not add anything to it.

The Messenian villages and the olive country

The low-effort option. The country immediately around Kalamata is olive groves and hill villages, and a morning driving them with a village lunch at the end is a good use of a day when you have had enough of driving hard.
