That is not a criticism. Almost everything in the south-west is within an hour of here.
The city
Two parts, and they are unusually separate.
The seafront is a four-kilometre run of beach, marina and promenade, lined with cafes and busy every evening. This is where the city relaxes.
The old town, a couple of kilometres inland, is the historic centre: the castle on its hill, the church of the Holy Apostles where the Greek revolution was declared in 1821, a Byzantine museum, and the covered market, which is the best in the region and the place to understand what Messenia grows.
The 1986 earthquake destroyed much of the old fabric, which is why the two halves feel different in age.
The olives, and the silk
Kalamata olives are the protected variety grown here, large, almond-shaped and dark, and the oil from the surrounding groves is among the best in Greece. Both are sold plainly in the market rather than as souvenirs.
The city also has a silk tradition and a museum in a restored mansion covering it, alongside the region’s other trades.
What it is the base for
Everything within about an hour:
- The Mani and Kardamyli south along the coast.
- Koroni and Methoni, the Venetian castle ports, south-west.
- Voidokilia and Pylos, west.
- Ancient Messene, north, a very large and under-visited site with a stadium, theatre and city walls.
- Sparta and Mystras over the Taygetos on a spectacular road.
Getting there and how long
Kalamata airport takes seasonal international flights and domestic ones. Athens is about two and a half hours by motorway.
Three or four nights, using it as the hub it is.

Is Kalamata worth staying in?
As a base, very much: it has the airport, the hotels, and almost all of Messenia within an hour. As a sight in itself it is modest.
