The first is the north coast. The second is that Kos is the one Greek island you can genuinely cycle - it is flat, and the bike lanes are real rather than aspirational. Together they change what a day with kids costs you in effort.
The north coast is the answer, and it is specific
Tigaki, Marmari and Mastichari are the family side of the island: long, shallow, dune-backed sand, with warm knee-deep water a long way out, a steady breeze that keeps the windsurf schools in business, and flat cycling in every direction.
That “knee-deep a long way out” is the detail worth planning around. It is why this coast gets recommended for young children and why the same breeze that suits the windsurf schools is worth checking before you commit to an afternoon.
Mastichari also doubles as the Kalymnos port, which makes it the easiest base for a boat day.
Where not to base by accident
Kos Town is the base for evenings - the best restaurants, the bar street, and every layer of the history within a walk. But the town beaches are gravelly: you stay there for the town, not the sand. With small children that distinction matters more than it does on a couples trip.
Kardamena is the package strip closest to the airport and holds the island’s densest run of bars. Whether it is still the 18-30s resort of its reputation or has drifted toward couples and families is genuinely disputed, and we have not found a source that settles it. What both readings agree on is that the night is concentrated on one street - so if you book here, the question that affects your sleep is how far from it you are.
Kefalos, on the far-west peninsula, is the quiet one with its own sweeping bay and a village on the hill above.

The cycling, which is the real differentiator
On most Greek islands, “getting around with kids” means a hire car and a car seat. On Kos, if you are basing on the north coast, a bike can genuinely replace it for a good part of the week.
That is worth money and worth stress. It also changes the shape of a day: the beach is not a drive, it is a ride, and an afternoon that goes wrong is a short ride home rather than a negotiation.
Days that are not beach days
Kos does not need many, but it has good ones. The castle at the harbour mouth, the agora and the Asklepion are the history, and things to do in Kos covers what each is.
