Day trips from Kos: a country, a volcano

That also means you have to choose. Four of these are realistic in a day and two are not, and the difference is worth knowing before you book anything.

Bodrum, which is a different country

Bodrum sits 20 to 30 minutes across the strait from Kos Town harbour, and standard excursions give you a few hours ashore. That is typically enough for the crusader castle, the site of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the bazaar and the marina.

Treat it as the international border it is. Bring your passport, and check Turkey’s current entry rules through official Turkish government sources before you book rather than a tour seller’s summary. That is the one piece of this day nobody else will get right for you, and it changes.

Nisyros, the signature Greek day trip

Nisyros is a live volcanic island, and the thing you go for is that you can walk down into the Stefanos crater itself: steam vents, the smell of sulphur, a moonscape floor. Above it, Mandraki’s lanes and the cliff monastery of Panagia Spiliani are worth the rest of the day.

Ferries take somewhere between about 50 minutes and an hour and a half depending on the boat, several operators work the route, and in summer excursion boats also run from Kardamena as well as Kos Town. Which matters if you are staying at the package end of the island: the boat may leave from your own harbour.

Kalymnos, a different world 30 to 50 minutes away

Kalymnos runs mostly from Mastichari on the north coast, 30 to 50 minutes away, and it is a genuinely different island rather than a variation on this one: Pothia’s amphitheatre of a harbour, the sponge-diving history that built it, and rock climbing with a global reputation.

If you are basing on the north coast anyway, this is the easiest real island day you can have from Kos, because the port is already where you are staying.

Pserimos, if you want the small version

Pserimos is the beach islet in between, and it is excursion-boat territory: one strand, a few tavernas, done by dinner. That is the whole offer, and on the right day it is enough.

The two that do not work in a day, and why

Rhodes is 2 to 3 hours each way and Symi about 2. Both are better as legs of a Dodecanese hop than as a long day’s dash from here, and a day that is four to six hours of boat is not a day on an island. Choosing between them

If you have one boat day, the honest split is by what you want the day to be. Nisyros is the one you will describe afterwards. Bodrum is the one that adds a country. Kalymnos is the one that feels like ordinary Greek life rather than an excursion. Pserimos is the one you take when you want a beach and not a plan.
