The thing that makes Kos different

Most Greek islands are mountains with a coastline attached. Kos is flat, at least along the strip where people stay, and it has cycle paths.

That single fact reshapes the accommodation question. On Kos you can base yourself in the town, ride a bike to a beach, and never hire a car or wait for a bus - which is not true of Rhodes, Crete, Kefalonia or almost anywhere else. It is the most under-advertised practical feature of the island.

The second thing to know: Kos has a very clear split between the town, the family beach resorts, and one dedicated party resort.

The best base for most trips, and unusually good value for how much it offers.

Kos Town has a castle of the Knights at the harbour mouth, an archaeological zone of Roman and Hellenistic remains sitting openly in the middle of the modern streets, a marina, and the island’s densest concentration of restaurants and bars. It also has beaches within easy reach and the cycle network radiating out of it.

The nightlife is concentrated in one area of the town, which means you can be near it or away from it deliberately - ask which street a room is on.

It is also the base for the Asklepion, the ancient healing sanctuary a few kilometres out, and for the short hop across to Bodrum in Turkey.

The family beaches

Tigaki, a short ride west of town, is the standard family choice: a long sandy beach with shallow, calm water and a well-organised strip behind it. There is a salt lake behind it that gets flamingos in spring.

Mastichari, on the north coast, is quieter and lower-key, and it is the port for the short ferry to Kalymnos - a useful day out and a very different island.

Kardamena

The island’s party resort, about 30 km from the capital and a former fishing village. It is loud, it is aimed at a young crowd, and it does its job well.

Same advice as everywhere with this pattern: choose it deliberately or avoid it deliberately, and treat “near Kardamena” in a listing as information rather than decoration.

Kefalos and the far south-west

The far end of the island, around Kefalos and Kamari, is the quiet, scenic option: a long beach, a hill village above it with castle ruins, and a much slower pace.

It catches more wind than the north coast, which is why there are watersports here. It is also far enough from town that you will want wheels, which breaks the bicycle logic - so this is the base for people who want quiet more than convenience.

Bicycles, buses or a car?

A bicycle genuinely works for Kos Town, Tigaki and the beaches near the capital. Cycle paths run along the coast and the terrain is flat. This is the island where that is a real recommendation rather than a cute idea.

Buses cover the main resorts reasonably.

A car is worth it for Kefalos, the interior villages, and the mountain sites, and for seeing the island in a day or two. See which islands need a car.
