The pattern
- There is no general law permitting or banning beach nudity across the country. Enforcement, where it exists at all, is local and situational.
- Topless sunbathing is widespread and unremarkable on organised beaches across the islands.
- Full nudity is confined to specific beaches with a long-established reputation, and on those beaches nobody minds.
- Those beaches are almost always at the far end of a bay, past the sunbeds, or reached by a path or a boat. The geography does the sorting.
- It is not acceptable near a village, a family beach, a church or a harbour, and that is a matter of respect rather than policing.
Where it is long established
Without pretending this is a complete list, these are the places with a decades-old reputation:
- Crete: the beaches around Matala and Plakias on the south coast, and several coves on the far east.
- Mykonos: parts of the south-coast beaches, though the beach-club development has pushed it to the edges.
- Milos and the volcanic coves reached by boat.
- Skiathos: the south-west end of the island.
- Ios, Paros and Naxos: the far ends of the longer beaches.
- Gavdos, the southernmost point of Europe, where the free-camping culture has run for fifty years.
Ask locally rather than assuming from a website. Reputations move as development arrives, and the beach that was empty a decade ago may now have a bar on it.
The etiquette that keeps it working
- Look at what is already happening. If nobody on the beach is nude, that is the answer.
- Walk to the end. Mixed beaches sort themselves by distance from the car park.
- No cameras. This is the one that ends tolerance, and it is worth stating plainly: photographing people on a nude beach is unacceptable and in many circumstances unlawful.
- Cover up to leave. Walking through a village or into a taverna undressed is what turns a tolerant island into an intolerant one.
Naturist facilities
Greece has very few dedicated naturist resorts compared with France or Croatia. A small number of campsites and hotels advertise as naturist, mostly on Crete and in the Ionian. Everything else is the informal arrangement described above.
