The lake is the town’s living room. Everything else, the harbour, the shopping streets, the museum, arranges itself around it.

What to do

  • Walk the lake and the harbour, which takes twenty minutes and is the reason to be here in the evening.
  • The archaeological museum, holding finds from eastern Crete and worth an hour for anyone who has been to Knossos and wants the region’s own story.
  • The town beaches, small and central, with better swimming a short drive out along the gulf.
  • Boat trips across the gulf, including to Spinalonga, the fortress island whose leper-colony history is the region’s most affecting site.

As a base

Agios Nikolaos is the practical eastern base: enough town to eat well and shop, close to Elounda and Spinalonga, and within reach of the palm bay at Vai if you are willing to drive.

It is a long way from Chania and the west, which is the recurring problem with Crete: the island is 250 kilometres end to end and people underestimate it. Where to stay in Crete sets out the split, and if your trip is short the honest advice is to pick one end.

Practical notes

  • The lake is deep and walled; it is scenery rather than swimming.
  • Evenings are the town’s best hours, when the cafes round the water fill.
  • Parking is easier above the centre than beside the harbour.
  • Bus links along the north coast are decent, and this is one of the easier Cretan towns to reach without a car.
