Where to stay in Skopelos

Skopelos is big enough and green enough to be a destination rather than a stop, which means the choice of base actually matters here in a way it does not on a small island. There are two towns at opposite ends and a forested middle, and each gives you a different week.

Skopelos Town, the harbour, if you want the island’s life. The main town is a tiered amphitheatre of houses stacked steeply around the harbour, slate roofs and whitewashed walls, with the ruined kastro above and a working waterfront below. It has the tavernas, the boats and the evenings. The trade is physical: the lanes are stepped and largely car-free, so wherever you sleep up in the tiers you carry your bag up steps to reach it. That is the single most common surprise on this island and it is worth planning for rather than discovering.

Glossa, the north, if you want the quiet version. The second town sits higher and quieter at the northern end, above the port of Loutraki. Same island, much less traffic, and a different view of the same water. Choose it if the harbour town sounds busier than you want, or if you are arriving and leaving through Loutraki.

The coast, if the beaches are the point. Basing out on the west or south coast puts you near Kastani, Milia, Panormos and the rest, and turns the beaches from a drive into a doorstep. The trade runs the other way from the town: dinner and the evening become a journey rather than a walk.

The thing all three have in common: you will want wheels. Skopelos is large and its beaches are spread rather than concentrated, so a week without transport means picking one bay and staying near it. That is a legitimate holiday and it is not the one most people are imagining when they book. Which islands need a car covers the question.

How you get here, and why it changes the calculation. There is no airport. Ferries and hydrofoils run from Volos, Agios Konstantinos and Mantoudi on Evia, usually via Skiathos, which has the nearest airport and is twenty minutes away by fast boat. Most people who see Skopelos see it on a day trip off that boat, and they see the chapel and one beach. Sleeping here is the whole difference between the island and the excursion.

The stairs, said plainly. The old town is stepped and largely car-free. If stairs or a heavy bag are a problem, base at the waterfront or at Glossa rather than up in the tiers, and check what your accommodation actually provides before booking rather than assuming.
