Inside that ring is a labyrinth: covered passages, dead ends, steps, and doorways at head height where a ladder used to be.
Walking the kastelli
Go in and get lost, which takes about half an hour and is the entire point. Some passages are tunnels under houses; some open into small courtyards; a few come out on roofs.
The village is lived in rather than restored, so expect washing lines, cats, motorbikes and building work alongside the medieval fabric. That mixture is what makes it feel like a place rather than an exhibit.
Above the village stands the Goulas, a Venetian tower, and a line of windmills on the ridge behind.
Why almost nobody comes
Emporio has no caldera view, no beach and no obvious postcard, and it is fifteen minutes from Fira in the wrong direction. Coach itineraries skip it entirely.
For travellers on a second or third visit to Santorini, that makes it one of the best hours on the island. Pair it with Megalochori and Pyrgos for a full inland afternoon, or with Perissa, which is just down the road.
Practical notes
- Park at the edge; the lanes are for walking only.
- Wear shoes with grip: the passages are stone, uneven and dark in places.
- Respect that it is residential, especially in the enclosed passages where a doorway is somebody’s front door.
- Midday works here, unusually, because much of the kastelli is covered and shaded.
Last checked August 2026. Access to the kastelli lanes is informal and changes - see our editorial policy.
Common questions
What is the kastelli at Emporio?
A medieval fortified settlement where the outer houses were built as a continuous wall without outward-facing windows, protecting a maze of lanes inside.
Is Emporio worth visiting?
For anyone interested in how island villages were built to survive raids, yes. It is also one of the few places on Santorini with no crowd.
How long does Emporio take?
About half an hour to walk the kastelli, longer if you climb to the windmills on the ridge.
Does Emporio have a view of the caldera?
No. It is inland in the south of the island, which is part of why it stays quiet.
How far is Emporio from Fira?
Roughly fifteen minutes by car to the south, close to Perissa.
