Ephesus, and the thing to check first

The best day trip from Samos, and it is not in Greece. Ancient Ephesus lies across the strait on the Turkish coast and is one of the great classical sites of the Mediterranean, on a scale that nothing on Samos itself approaches.

Boats cross from Vathy and from Pythagorio in season, and the trip is a morning out and an afternoon back.

The thing to check before anything else is the paperwork. This is an international crossing, and leaving and re-entering the Schengen area is the part travellers overlook until the morning of. Patmos, and the monastery on the hill

South of Samos lies Patmos, and it is the other trip worth planning around. The fortified Monastery of Saint John stands above the Chora like a castle, and below it the Cave of the Apocalypse is where tradition places the writing of the Book of Revelation.

It is a working monastery and a serious pilgrimage site rather than a museum, with a dress code to match. The Chora around it is one of the better-preserved island towns in the Dodecanese.

Samos to Patmos covers the crossing. It is short enough for a day and good enough to be worth a night if you can spare one.

The mountain villages, on your own island

The trip most visitors skip. Two ranges fill Samos, and the high ground catches the weather, so the upper slopes hold pine forest, springs and seasonal waterfalls where flatter islands hold rock.

Manolates and Vourliotes on the northern slopes are the villages to aim for, linked to each other by old paths and reached by winding roads that are part of the day. Eat up there rather than driving back down for lunch.

This is a genuinely different island from the coast road, and it is a day out that no ferry timetable can cancel.

Potami, the gorge behind the beach

West beyond Karlovasi, Potami is a beach with a wooded gorge behind it, a short walk inland to waterfalls that run in spring and early summer, and the best easy hike on the island.

Swim first, then walk up. In high summer the falls thin out and the walk is still worth doing for the shade.

The ancient south, if you are based north

Not a day trip for everyone, but if you are staying at Vathy or on the north coast then Pythagorio, the Heraion and the Eupalinian tunnel are a full day at the other end of the island and the strongest single day Samos offers on its own.
