The short answer
Fly. It is about an hour, there are daily flights, and the alternative is a genuinely long day.
The thing to understand is structural: Corfu is in the Ionian Sea, on the other side of the country from Piraeus. There is no useful Athens-to-Corfu ferry in the way there is an Athens-to-Santorini ferry. You reach Corfu from Igoumenitsa, on the north-west mainland - a crossing of roughly 1h10 to 1h30 - and getting to Igoumenitsa from Athens is about five hours by road.
So the ferry is not really a ferry route. It is a mainland journey with a short crossing on the end.
Fly if you want the day. Drive or take the bus if you are bringing a car, or travelling on to the north-west anyway.

Greece trains visitors to think in ferries. You want an island, you go to Piraeus, you sail. That model works beautifully for the Cyclades, the Dodecanese and Crete, and it does not work at all for the Ionian.
The Ionian islands sit off the west coast. Piraeus is on the east. A boat between them would have to round the entire Peloponnese, which is why nobody runs one as a passenger service worth taking.
Instead the Ionian is served from western ports: Igoumenitsa for Corfu, Kyllini for Zakynthos, and so on down the chain. Each is a short crossing from a mainland port that is itself a long way from Athens.
Once you see that, the flight stops looking like the lazy option and starts looking like the obvious one.
If you do go overland
There are two good reasons to: you want a car on Corfu and would rather not hire one there, or you are travelling through the north-west anyway.
The shape of it: Athens to Igoumenitsa is roughly five hours by road. The intercity KTEL bus does the run, and the combined bus-plus-ferry journey is commonly quoted at about four and a half hours on the coach plus around an hour and a half for the crossing. From Patra, further south, there are also sailings, longer at roughly five to seven hours.
One warning that applies to any KTEL plan: the network is genuinely good but there is no national timetable - each regional company publishes its own. Check the operator for your date rather than a third-party summary. Getting around Greece explains how that system works.

Arriving
Flights land at CFU, close to Corfu Town. Ferries from Igoumenitsa arrive at the town’s port, also close in. Either way you are near the old town, which is the best base for a first visit and a genuinely lovely place to walk.
