Day trips from Naxos: the Small Cyclades

The best day off Naxos is the Small Cyclades boat, Koufonisia above all: clear water, one small town, an island that runs slower still.

The catch is scheduling rather than distance. Sailings are seasonal and thin outside summer, so check the day’s sailing before you promise anyone an island - this is the trip most likely to be quietly unavailable on the day you want it, and the one where working it out at the quay is too late.

Paros, the spontaneous one

Paros works as a spontaneous hop at 30 to 60 minutes each way, which is short enough that you can decide over breakfast. It is the one day trip here you do not need to plan.

It is also genuinely different rather than more of the same: Paros is prettier at town level, easier without a car and livelier at night, where Naxos is bigger, greener and cheaper with the better sand. Delos, which is a long day and depends on the return

The Mykonos crossing is short enough that some make a long day of it for ancient Delos. It works, but it is the most fragile plan on this page: confirm the return sailing first, because the day only exists if the boat back does.

Treat it as a deliberate expedition rather than a spare afternoon. If Delos is the reason you came to the Cyclades at all, it is easier from Mykonos itself.

Amorgos, if you would rather take the slow boat

What this means for the plan

One day trip is right for a four-to-five-day stay, and it should be the Small Cyclades boat unless the schedule refuses. On a two-night route stop you are choosing between the mountain villages and a boat - one, not both - and the villages are the thing you cannot get anywhere else.
