The bay faces away from the prevailing wind, so the water is usually calm when the north-coast beaches are being hammered, and it is shallow for a long way out.
What it is like
Sand, gentle water, and a line of restaurants and hotels directly behind the beach, several with tables almost on the sand. Loungers cover much of the front in season.
It is not a wild beach and it is not a party beach. It is a comfortable, sociable bay with everything within a few steps, which is exactly why families and older visitors gravitate to it.
Why it is convenient
Three practical reasons Ornos gets used as a base:
- Minutes from Mykonos Town by road, so dinner in the lanes does not need a plan.
- Boats along the south coast run from here in season, to Platis Gialos, Psarou and the beaches beyond.
- Buses to town and the south coast are frequent in summer.

If you want the opposite end of the island’s character, Agios Sostis in the north is the version with nothing built on it.
