Where to eat in Crete

Crete is the one Greek island with a cuisine that stands on its own name, and the difference is on every menu: island cheeses, mountain greens, olive oil the island exports, and the Cretan habit of ending a meal with raki and something sweet without being asked. Eating here is a reason to come, not a thing you do between beaches.

Chania’s old town is the setting. The Venetian harbour and its lanes hold the island’s most atmospheric tables - courtyards, wine restaurants in old houses, kitchens a lane back from the water. The harbour-front row itself trades heavily on the view; the ratings concentrate one and two streets behind it, which is exactly the pattern the cards below follow.

Rethymno eats between two old towns’ reputations. Smaller than Chania’s scene and calmer than Heraklion’s, the lanes of the old quarter hold some of the most consistently rated kitchens on the island - and the town’s best-known tables book out in season.

Heraklion is where Cretan cooking is a statement. The capital’s kitchens lean hardest into the island’s own produce and recipes, and several of the most-reviewed restaurants in all of Greece are here. Many of the best open only in the evening; a lunchtime walk past a shut door is the rhythm, not a closure.

How the places below were chosen. Each card names a real, currently trading place selected by the island’s visitors, not by us: it clears a review-count floor and a rating floor on TripAdvisor or Google, with no contradiction on the other platform, and it carries the date we last checked it. We have not eaten our way across Crete, so no card describes a dish - it says what kind of place it is, where it is, and that the people who ate there rate it consistently high.
