At Knossos you walk through repainted columns and rebuilt walls that make the place legible and, to some archaeologists, misleading. At Phaistos you walk on the excavated remains and read the plan from the ground. Which you prefer says more about you than about the two sites.
What you see
The palace sits high, with the plain below it and Mount Ida behind, and the setting carries much of the visit. The clearest things on the ground:
- The grand staircase, a broad flight of steps that survives well enough to feel like architecture rather than rubble.
- The central court, the open rectangle every Minoan palace is built around, here with a clean view out over the plain.
- Storage magazines with their large storage jars in place.
- The layers of two palaces, an earlier one destroyed and a later one built over it, visible in the same walls.
The Phaistos Disc was found here. It is not here now: it is in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum with the rest of the island’s finds.
Why it is quieter
Phaistos is an hour or so from Heraklion across the island, on the far side of the mountains from the north-coast resorts, so it takes a deliberate half day. The reward for the drive is a site you can often have largely to yourself in the early morning, which is not a sentence anyone writes about Knossos in July.
Pair it with the Roman ruins at Gortyna on the same road, or with a swim on the south coast at Matala, and the half day becomes a full one worth having.
Practical notes
- Shade is scarce on an exposed ridge. Early morning, hat, water.
- The surfaces are uneven excavated stone, with steps and no handrails in places.
- A guide or a plan helps more here than at a reconstructed site, because nothing is labelled by being rebuilt.

What is Phaistos?
The second largest Minoan palace on Crete, on a ridge above the Messara plain in the south of the island, excavated but never reconstructed.
What is the difference between Knossos and Phaistos?
Knossos was partly reconstructed in the early twentieth century, with rebuilt walls and repainted columns. Phaistos was left as excavated, so you read the plan from the foundations, and it is far quieter.

If you have seen Knossos and want the same civilisation without the crowds and the reconstruction, yes. On a single-palace trip, most visitors choose Knossos.
