Beaches in Chios

Here is the honest framing first, because it decides whether this page is useful to you. Chios is not a beach destination in the way Rhodes or Naxos is, and nobody should book it for the coast. It is a destination for the mastic villages, for Nea Moni’s mosaics and for a landscape and history you cannot get anywhere else, with swimming as the thing you do between them. Judged that way the coast is a genuine pleasure. Judged as the main event, it will disappoint.

Why the road decides your swimming. The mastic villages are in the south, Nea Moni is inland, Anavatos is deeper into the interior and Chios Town is on the east coast. Nothing connects conveniently. So a beach here is not somewhere you wander down to, it is somewhere you drive to, and how many you see in a week is a question about the road rather than the sea.

We name no individual beach on this page, and that is deliberate. Our own Chios guide names none, and no beach here was read from a source we would stand behind. Rather than fill the gap with names that sound right, this page tells you the mechanism and leaves the specifics to a map you can check on the day. That is less satisfying and it is the version we can defend.

What the mechanism is. The island’s coasts face several ways, so on any given day one side is more sheltered than another. The volcanic geology that shows elsewhere on the island shows on the shore too, so expect pebble as readily as sand. And the coast away from Chios Town is thinly developed, so assume nothing behind the beach: water and shade travel with you here more than on a compact island.

How to build a day that works. The mastic villages sit only a short drive apart, roughly twenty minutes from one to the next, which makes them a natural half-day loop. Pair two villages with one swim rather than chasing three beaches across an island that will not cooperate. That is the shape of a good Chios day and it is the opposite of how most people plan an island week.

The car, plainly. This is one of the clearest yes answers on the site to which islands need a car. Without one you are limited to whatever is walkable from your base, which on Chios is a small fraction of the island.
