The nearest airport, Aktion near Preveza, sits just across the water, a short drive from the bridge.
That single fact reshapes the trip. It removes the part of Greek island planning that goes wrong most often, and it makes Lefkada the obvious anchor for a mainland road trip. One detail to know: the bridge floats rather than arches, so it swings open at set times to let boats through the canal and road traffic waits. Zakynthos is two islands, and you choose before you book
Zakynthos runs two holidays at once, and picking between them comes before dates or hotels. The south is developed and loud. The north and west are green, quiet and cliff-bound.
That is a genuine fork rather than a spectrum, and booking the wrong side is the most common way a Zakynthos holiday disappoints. It also means the island can suit almost anyone, which Lefkada cannot claim in the same way.
One expectation to correct: the Venetian name Zante still fills brochures, but a major earthquake in 1953 destroyed most of Zakynthos Town, and what stands today is a rebuilt working Greek port rather than a preserved Venetian set piece like Corfu. Beaches
