Porto Katsiki is the signature Lefkada image: a wedge of sand under a sheer white cliff, on the island’s west coast. If you have seen one photograph of Lefkada, it was almost certainly this one.

Getting down to it
You leave the car in a paid car park at the top, and walk down a long flight of steps cut into the cliff. That is the whole access: there is no road to the sand.
The car park fills. Going early is not a preference here, it is the difference between parking and turning around, and it is also how you get the beach before the heat.
Almost no shade
This is the part people underestimate. There is little natural shade at the bottom, and the cliff that makes the photograph is not a parasol.
So treat it as a morning beach with a full water bottle. Carry water down with you and wear shoes you can walk down steps in - the same advice that applies to every cliff beach on this coast, and more so here because the climb back is at the hottest end of the day.
What the photographs do not show
Scale. The parasols on the sand are the only thing in most frames that gives you the height of the cliff standing over them. It is considerably bigger than it looks.
How it sits against the other two
Lefkada’s west coast has three famous beaches and they sort by effort rather than by looks - the water is turquoise almost everywhere.
- Porto Katsiki is the demanding, spectacular one: steps, no shade, and the image.
- Egremni, further south, is a special case since the 2015 earthquake and needs checking locally before you plan a day around it.
- Kathisma is the west made easy: loungers, beach bars and level access straight off the road, which is exactly why it collects the crowds the other two make you earn.
If you want calm, clear water without the staircase, the coves are gentler - Agiofili near Vasiliki and Mylos on the west. The Lefkada beaches guide sorts the whole coast by effort.
Practical notes
You need a car. On Lefkada that is arithmetic rather than advice: the best beaches sit down winding roads the limited bus network was never built to serve. Fill the tank before the long west-coast runs.
Step-free access does not exist here. If stairs are a problem, this beach and Egremni are the two to leave off the list - Kathisma is the west coast without the staircase.
When to come. Late May to June and September give warm days, a swimmable sea and thinner crowds. July and August are hottest, busiest and windiest.
Common questions
Is Porto Katsiki worth the steps? For most people yes, and it is the reason the island is on their list at all. If the climb back in afternoon heat is the problem rather than the descent, go early and leave before midday.
Can you get there by boat? Boat trips run along this coast from the island’s harbours, and seeing the cliffs from the water is a genuinely different experience from standing under them. We print no operator, fare or schedule - check locally.
