Kathisma is the west made easy. Loungers, beach bars, and level access straight off the road - which is exactly why it collects the crowds the other two make you earn.

The trade it makes
Lefkada’s west-coast beaches sort by the effort each one costs you in stairs, parking and shade, not by looks - the water is turquoise almost everywhere.
- Porto Katsiki: a paid car park at the top and a long flight of steps cut into the cliff, with almost no shade at the bottom.
- Egremni: an even longer staircase once, and a land access that has been uncertain since the 2015 earthquake.
- Kathisma: you park and you walk onto it.
So Kathisma trades solitude for access. If you want the drama and the empty frame, the staircases are where they are. If you want the west coast on a day when a staircase is not happening - with small children, with a bad knee, at the end of a week of driving - this is the one.
What is actually there
It is an organised beach: loungers to rent and beach bars behind the sand, which on this coast is unusual. The other famous west-coast beaches are effectively unserviced.
That also makes it the west-coast beach you can spend a whole day on without carrying everything you need down a cliff.
The crowds are the point, not a flaw
Being honest about it: this beach is busy because it is easy, and the same access that makes it work is what fills it. Going early still helps in high season.
If you want the turquoise water and the quiet, the coves are the answer rather than the famous names - Agiofili near Vasiliki in the south, reached on foot or by a short boat shuttle from the harbour, and Mylos on the west, a walk or a boat ride and quieter for the effort.
Practical notes
You still need a car. Level access off the road only helps if you can get to the road: Lefkada’s west coast sits down winding routes the limited bus network was never built to serve. Fill the tank before the long west-coast runs.
This is the step-free-ish option on this coast, but we are describing the access our own guide describes, not certifying it for anyone. Look at it on the day.
When to come. Late May to June and September give warm days, a swimmable sea and thinner crowds. July and August are hottest, busiest and windiest - and on the beach with the easiest access, busiest means something.
Common questions
Kathisma or Porto Katsiki? Porto Katsiki for the photograph and the drama; Kathisma for a day you can actually spend on the sand. Doing both on one trip is normal and they are not far apart.
Is it good for a full day? It is the west-coast beach best set up for one, because of the loungers and the bars.
Is there shade? Rented shade rather than natural shade, which is more than the cliff beaches offer. Bring water either way - this coast is exposed.
