Laganas in the south is a purpose-built British party strip with a young 18-25 crowd. The rest of the island runs on beaches, boat trips and quiet villages, and base anywhere else and you will barely notice it. Booking near it by accident, because the photographs of the bay looked good, is the expensive mistake here.
The second decision is more interesting, because the best family sand on the island comes with rules attached.
The family bases
Tsilivi, Alykes and Kalamaki are the family bases: gently shelving sand with resort infrastructure built around it.
Zakynthos Town is the rebuilt, working port - tavernas that serve locals, the Kyllini ferry on the doorstep, and a central position that reaches both halves of the island. It is not a resort, and it is better for that, but it is not a beach base either.
Vasilikos, on the quiet south-east tip, holds the island’s best sand and is more the couples pick. The far north is boat-and-cove country and needs a car.

Kalamaki, and why its rules are the point
Kalamaki sits inside the marine park’s nesting bay. Its beach closes from sunset to morning in season, and stretches are roped off through summer.
The practical read: plan mornings on the sand and evenings elsewhere. Kalamaki’s sheltered, shallow sand is one of the island’s most usable family beaches, and it doubles as nesting habitat - both things are true at once, and the rules are what keep them true.
Treat the rules as the point rather than the small print. Explaining to a child why a rope is there is a better afternoon than most excursions.
The marine park, and what children actually see
Loggerhead season runs roughly May to October: nesting from late spring, hatchlings from late summer into autumn, centred on Laganas Bay and Marathonisi inside the National Marine Park.
Boats in the bay hold a 6-knot speed limit, and Gerakas also reportedly runs a seasonal visitor cap, with a kiosk at the entrance - arrive in the morning or late afternoon.
None of that guarantees anyone sees a turtle. A trip that promises to get you closer than the rules allow is not offering you a better day, and it is worth telling children that before you go rather than after.
The boat day, and the spare day
Zakynthos is a boat-trip island, and boat trips cancel for swell - which with children is an argument for keeping a spare day rather than putting the boat on your last one.
