Navagio is closed, and this is the thing to check first

Navagio Beach is closed through 31 October 2026 after rockfalls. The closure bars boats from coming within 50 metres of the shore and bans swimming in the cove.

You can still see it two ways: from the clifftop viewpoint near Volimes - which the decision makes conditional on the required fencing works being finished - or from a viewing-only boat trip holding outside the exclusion zone.

That was last checked on 14 July 2026. Re-check the status before you book, because this is exactly the kind of fact that changes without anyone updating the excursion seller’s poster. If a trip is sold to you as landing on Navagio, that alone tells you what the seller is worth.

The Blue Caves, on the north-east tip

The sea caves at the northern end of the island are the other half of the classic boat day, and they are unaffected by the Navagio closure. They are usually sold together, so read what a combined trip actually includes now rather than what the photograph implies.

The marine park, and why it has rules

Loggerhead season runs roughly May to October: nesting from late spring, hatchlings from late summer into autumn, centred on Laganas Bay and Marathonisi inside the National Marine Park.

This is a protected area with real restrictions on where boats go and how close they get, and those restrictions are the reason there are still turtles to see. A trip that promises to get you closer than the rules allow is not offering you a better day.

The west-coast drive, which is not a boat at all

The west coast is the one day out that the swell cannot cancel. It is a drive rather than an excursion, and on an island where everything else depends on the sea being flat, that makes it the reliable card to keep in hand.

Kefalonia, in summer

The summer Kefalonia hop is what a full week on Zakynthos adds, rather than something to squeeze into five days. Kefalonia is bigger, greener and more scenic, and it is a genuine second island rather than a variation on this one - Zakynthos vs Kefalonia sets them against each other.

How the days fit together

Five days is the sweet spot here and the reason is this page: a boat day for the caves, a marine-park beach day, a west-coast drive and a spare day for wind. Three days works from one good base. A week adds the interior and the summer Kefalonia hop.
