A Zakynthos itinerary with a spare day

Five days is the sweet spot: a boat day for the caves, a marine-park beach day, a west-coast drive and a spare day for wind. Three days works from one good base. A week adds the interior and the summer Kefalonia hop.

Decide the base before anything else, because of one corner

Laganas in the south is a purpose-built British party strip with a young 18-25 crowd. The rest of the island runs on beaches, boat trips and quiet villages, and base anywhere else and you will barely notice it.

That is the single most consequential choice on this island, and it cuts both ways: if the strip is the point of your trip, base on it deliberately. If it is not, the mistake is booking near it by accident because the photographs of the bay looked good. Where to stay in Zakynthos covers the areas.

The four days, and the fifth

The boat day. The Blue Caves at the northern tip, and the Navagio viewpoint - which is currently a viewpoint rather than a landing, because the beach is closed through 31 October 2026 after rockfalls. Day trips from Zakynthos has the current position and what to check before booking.

The marine-park day. Laganas Bay and Marathonisi, inside the National Marine Park, with the loggerhead season running roughly May to October. This is a beach day with rules attached, and the rules are the reason it is worth having.

The west-coast drive. The one day the sea cannot cancel, which is why it belongs in the middle of the plan rather than at the end.

The spare day. Not a rest day - a held day. Put it after the boat day and you can simply move the boat if the morning is wrong.

Where the extra days go

With a week you add the interior, which is the half of Zakynthos most visitors never see, and the summer hop to Kefalonia. With three days you drop to one boat trip and one coast, and you accept that a bad-swell morning costs you the thing you came for.

When to come

The turtle season and the swimming season overlap but are not the same window, and the marine park is busiest at the height of summer. Shoulder months buy you a calmer island and better odds on the water, which on a boat-trip island matters more than it does elsewhere.
