That orientation is the whole character of the place. The sunset goes down behind Delos and its neighbour Rinia, and this is the beach people come to for it.
What it is like
Small, sheltered and sandy, in a cove below a hillside of low buildings. It is a fraction of the size of Platis Gialos or Paradise, with loungers across most of it and a handful of places to eat behind.
The water is calm here more often than on the south coast, because the headland shelters the cove from the summer meltemi that blows down the strait.
It is not a quiet beach in the sense of being empty. It is quiet in the sense that nobody is playing music at you.
Why people choose it
- The view, which is the reason. Delos sits across the water, low and brown, and the strait between is full of boats in the late afternoon.
- The sunset, which on an island whose beaches mostly face the other way is a genuine differentiator.
- The scale. A short cove with a few tavernas is a different proposition from the beach-club coast.
The trade-off is size: it fills, and when it is full there is nowhere to spread out to.
Where it sits
- Ornos is around the headland to the east, and the two are often visited together.
- The Delos boats leave from Mykonos town, not from here, so the view is the connection rather than the transport. Our Delos page covers the crossing.
