The result is a village that is genuinely compact and genuinely vertical. Everything is within five minutes of everything else, and most of those five minutes are stairs.
What is there
- The harbour, still working, with fishing boats and the excursion boats that leave from it.
- The stepped lanes, lined with tavernas and rooms, climbing from the water.
- A small town beach at the mouth of a river bed, east of the harbour, which is functional rather than beautiful.
- The boats, which are the real attraction: they run along the coast to beaches you cannot easily drive to.
Why people stay here
Two reasons, and they pull in different directions.
The first is the coast either side, reachable by boat: a run of beaches west towards Preveli and east towards Matala, several of them without road access. A day here is often a boat day.
The second is the inland country. Agia Galini sits at the bottom of the Amari valley and within reach of Phaistos and the Messara plain, which puts the Minoan south within a short drive.
It is also a long-established package destination, and in high season it fills. The village is small enough that this is noticeable.
Where it fits
- Matala is east along the same coast, with its cave cliffs.
- Preveli and Plakias are west, over the headlands.
- Rethymno is north over the mountains through the Amari valley, which is one of the better drives on the island.

Common questions
Where is Agia Galini?
On the south coast of Crete where the Messara plain reaches the sea, between Matala to the east and Preveli to the west.
What is Agia Galini like?
A small village built steeply up a hillside above a fishing harbour, with stepped lanes rather than streets, tavernas along them and a compact centre.
Is there a good beach at Agia Galini?
The village beach is functional rather than beautiful. The better beaches are along the coast either side, and several are reached by the boats that leave from the harbour.
What can you do from Agia Galini?
Take boats to the coastal beaches, drive inland to Phaistos and the Messara plain, or cross the Amari valley north towards Rethymno.
Is Agia Galini busy?
It is a long-established resort village and it fills in high season, which is noticeable because the place itself is small.
