It is one of the most striking pieces of coast on an island made of striking coast, and for most visitors it is a viewpoint rather than a swim.
The view, and the descent
From the parking area a short walk brings you to the cliff edge and the view down into the channel. That takes ten minutes and is what most people come for.
Getting down to the water is a different proposition. The route is a steep, eroded scramble down soft rock, and the ground here is exactly the kind that gives way. Conditions change, sections have been closed at times, and there is no supervision, no railing and no easy way back up.
We are not going to tell you it is safe or unsafe; that is not a call a travel page can make. What we can say plainly is that the descent is unmade, the rock is friable, and the view from the top is the reason the place is famous.
What is nearby
- Phylakopi, the Bronze Age settlement, is minutes away and one of the important prehistoric sites of the Cyclades.
- Sarakiniko, the white moonscape, is on the same coast road.
- Pollonia, for lunch, is at the end of it.

Practical notes
- Parking is a rough area beside the road.
- No facilities of any kind at the site.
- Keep back from the edge: the rock is soft and undercut in places.
- Best light is the middle of the day, when the sun reaches into the channel and the colour appears.
