What it is like

A long shallow bay of pale sand, with water that stays waist-deep a remarkable distance out. It is the warmest and calmest swimming near the town, which makes it the default family beach for anyone staying in Chora.

Behind the sand runs a strip of hotels, cafes and tavernas, and there are loungers on the organised sections with free stretches between them.

At the far southern end the water and the wind suit beginner windsurfing, and a school works from there through the season.

How it compares

  • Agios Georgios: walkable, shallow, developed, busy.
  • Agios Prokopios: a bus ride out, longer, better sand.
  • Agia Anna: the same run, with a village on it.
  • Plaka: the long quiet one further south.
  • Mikri Vigla: wind on one side, calm on the other.

If you have a car or a bus pass, the beaches south of town are better. If you have an afternoon and a suitcase in a room behind the beach, this is the one.

Practical notes

  • The shallow water warms early, which extends the season either side of summer.
  • Shade is rented, and the strip behind provides most of the cover.
  • It gets busy in August, being the town beach.
  • The walk from the port takes about ten minutes along the waterfront.
