It is also the clearest surviving expression of what happened after the fire of 1917, when the burnt centre was replanned on a monumental scale, opening a grand axis from the sea inland.
What you are looking at
Symmetrical facades in a French-influenced style with arcades at ground level, a broad open space stepping down to the seafront, and a long axis running inland from the water towards the upper town.
Look up: the buildings are the point, and the arcades below them hold the cafes that make the square a place to sit rather than cross.
When to be there
- Early morning, when it is empty and the light comes off the water.
- Evening, when the whole city is out and the cafes fill. This is the hour that explains Thessaloniki to visitors.
- Winter, when the square carries the city’s Christmas lights and market.
Where it fits
The square is the hinge of the centre. From it you walk east along the waterfront to the White Tower, inland to the Rotunda and the Roman forum, west into the market streets around Kapani and Modiano, and up the slope to Ano Poli.

Practical notes
- It is a square, not a sight. Fifteen minutes to look, longer if you sit, which is the correct way to use it.
- The seafront promenade running east from here is the city’s best walk, and it is long, flat and shaded in parts.
- Events close it regularly, which is a feature rather than a problem.
